Students who need to take Developmental Writing and Reading courses take IERW 001 or IERW 002

IERW 001, Integrated Reading and Writing I

A developmental course for native speakers of English designed to improve reading and writing skills. This course integrates the critical reading and writing skills students need to comprehend and interact with college-level texts and to produce original college-level writing in standard written English. Writing skills start at the sentence and paragraph level and culminate in multi-paragraph essays. Upon successful completion, students will advance to IERW 002 or ENGL 101 or ENGL 101A according to discipline guidelines. PREREQUISITE(S): Placement through assessment testing: Accuplacer English score of 0 - 79.9 and Accuplacer Reading score between 53 and 65. Six hours each week. SIX EQUIVALENT CREDIT HOURS. NOT APPLICABLE TO A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE. MAY NOT BE USED TO SATISFY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS. NOT INCLUDED IN GPA CALCULATION.

IERW 002, Integrated Reading and Writing II

A developmental course for native speakers of English designed to improve reading and writing skills. Writing skills start at the multi-paragraph essay level. Upon successful completion, students will advance to ENGL 101 or ENGL 101A according to discipline guidelines. PREREQUISITE(S): Placement through assessment testing or completion of IERW 001 with a grade of C or better. Five hours each week. FIVE EQUIVALENT CREDIT HOURS. NOT APPLICABLE TO A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE. MAY NOT BE USED TO SATISFY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS. NOT INCLUDED IN GPA CALCULATION.

Basic Writing Skills (no longer offered)

The ENGL001 and 002 courses are no longer offered at MC, but there some students who may have taken them in the past. We are leaving this information on this page for them, if needed. Current students: we do not offer ENGL001 or ENGL002 anymore.

Students who have been in the system since the 2016-2017 school year may need to finish through the two classes below. Your best bet is to speak with your counselor (make an appointment in Starfish through MyMC) or speak with Prof.  Ellen.Olmstead@montgomerycollege.edu.

ENGL001     Basic English I

Department Syllabus

A developmental course designed to improve writing skills, starting at the sentence and paragraph level. This course emphasizes writing correct sentences with a variety of structures and combining techniques, well-developed paragraphs, and multi-paragraph essays. Students will also study grammar, usage, mechanics, and punctuation. Students are required to submit a final portfolio that meets department requirements. ENGL 001 is intended for native speakers of English who need further preparation prior to taking credit courses in English. PREREQUISITE: An Accuplacer English score of 0-79.9. PRE- or COREQUISITE: READ 095 (which requires an Accuplacer reading score of 53-65) except for those students exempt from this requirement by initial placement testing. New and continuing students with reading scores below the READ 095 level are not eligible for ENGL 001. Formerly EN 001.

ENGL 001 counts for 5 billable hours but does not factorinto your GPA, count toward a degree, or transfer to a four-year institution.

ENGL 002     Basic English II

Department Syllabus

A developmental course designed to improve writing skills, starting at the essay level. This course emphasizes writing multi-paragraph essays. Students will also study grammar, usage, mechanics, and punctuation. Students are required to submit a final portfolio that meets department requirements. ENGL 002 is intended for native speakers of English who need further preparation prior to taking credit courses in English. PREREQUISITE: Completion of ENGL 001 with a grade of C or an Accuplacer English score of 80-89.9. PRE- or COREQUISITE: READ 095 (which requires an Accuplacer reading score of 53-65), except for those students exempted from this requirement by initial placement testing. New and continuing students with reading scores below the READ 095 level are not eligible for ENGL 002. Formerly EN 002.

ENGL 002 counts for 5 billable hours but does not factorinto your GPA, count toward a degree, or transfer to a four-year institution.
