To serve the Adult ESOL population to the best of one's ability, understanding the whys of the English language are a must. This course will help you to understand the formation of English grammar and how to best to explain it to your students.

Teaching American pronunciation to Adult ESOL learners (TED 010)

Participants will discover (or rediscover) the basic rules of spoken English and be able to apply them to their own teaching. Participants will try out a variety of discovery-based and multisensory activities and techniques and learn to adapt them for students. They will explore ways to integrate pronunciation into everyday lessons. Topics will include the key role of stress and rhythm in spoken English, thought groups and pausing, intonation, reduced sounds, and segmental.

Beyond the Text Book: Activities and games that work in the Adult ESOL classroom (TED 011)

Adult learning theory supports the idea that traditional book learning is not sufficient for adult students to apply classroom learning to actual language use. Therefore, this workshop will explore how adult learning theory encourages the incorporation of cooperative, interactive, and kinesthetic learning activities in the adult language classroom. Participants will also compare the benefits of traditional textbook learning to the benefits of interactive activities. During the workshop, participants will brainstorm, identify, and discuss activities and games they have previously used to support language learning so as to gather new ideas and inspiration from one another. Participants will also be introduced to several activities successfully used by the presenter in adult language classrooms. Lastly, participants will be given time to create new activities that can be used in the classroom in multiple ways with varied life skills and grammar themes.

More than just a computer: Using technology in the Adult ESOL classroom (TED 012)

Technology is everywhere and it is intertwined is all aspects of our lives. Using technology in the classroom is a vital piece to our students success in society and the workforce. This hands-on workshop will explore deductively and inductively how to teach communicatively using realia connected to a textbook in a class setting within specific time/program constraints. Attendees will explore where and how to find relevant materials that connect to adult learners’ everyday lives. During the workshop, participants will walk through the process of utilizing needs assessments, can do lists, and objectives and connecting them to appropriate level authentic materials.
