A Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Program

Are You Ready to Make a Difference?  

Montgomery College (MC) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) partner to offer an innovative teacher preparation program for talented individuals who wish to change careers and become teachers in MCPS secondary schools. This competitive admissions program is designed to address MCPS needs for excellent teachers in high demand fields.  

Deadline for applications for the Spring/Summer 2019 Cohort is February  1, 2019;  

Deadline for applications for the Winter/Spring 2020 Cohort is June 15, 2019  

ACET candidates are recruited in these areas
• High School: Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Technology Education 
• Middle School: Mathematics and Science 
• World Languages: French and Spanish (placement in middle and high schools, with Pre K-12 certification)

NEW!  If you are a STEM professional with at least three years of experience in the non-teaching  field, you may be eligible for participation in our Noyce Scholars program and a full cost stipend! 

Potential candidates must have:  

  • at least a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 2.75
  • expertise in their selected teaching field as supported by course work / experience / test scores
  • earned required scores on basic skills testing and the content exam (Praxis or ACTFL) in their desired field  at the time of application

Note: If your degree is from an institution outside the U.S., you must submit an evaluation of it from one of the MSDE-approved agencies.

The ACET program includes
  • a ten to twelve week teaching institute which features face-to-face classes as well as online components
  • a small cohort of candidates
  • a strong support system with MC and MCPS faculty throughout the program
  • a five-week internship to enhance your transition into teaching
  • a one year teaching residency in MCPS with full pay and benefits
  • completion of all requirements for the Maryland Standard Professional Certificate
