If you have earned college credits at another institution and would like to earn a certificate or degree from Montgomery College, you may receive transfer credit.
If you are applying to a Health Sciences program there are additional admission and enrollment requirements. See the Health Sciences Admissions Page
- Apply to Montgomery College if you have not previously done so. There is a one-time application fee of $25.
- Have your transcript sent to the Office of Admissions and Records.
- Have your transcripts mailed from your original school to any of our three campus Offices of Admissions & Records listed below.
- If you are hand-delivering your transcript, it should be in a sealed envelope.
- Submit documentation from your original school showing that you have fulfilled the prerequisites(s) indicated in the current Montgomery College Catalog for the course(s) you wish to take.
- You may submit a "Permission to Enroll" form or letter from your academic advisor that specifies the course(s) you may take at Montgomery College. Obtain this form from your original school’s Registration office.
- This will enable the College to waive the requirements for prerequisite checks and/or assessment tests.
- The "Permission to Enroll" form also assures that the course listed will be transferable back to the home institution.
- Processing time is two weeks (Up to 4 weeks during peak times)
- After Montgomery College has received your prerequisite documentation, register for your courses.
Students may be awarded credit for prior learning in a number of ways including:
- A Credit by Montgomery College Examination
Credit by examination may be earned for courses identified in the catalog with: (CE)" after the course title. Such examinations are prepared and evaluated by Montgomery College faculty. The cost is 40 percent of the in-county tuition rate. Contact the appropriate department for additional information.
- Prior Learning Assessment
Students may receive credit for prior learning through the Portfolio Development Program. Students are required to attend an Information Session in order to register for the Portfolio Development Program. Call (240) 567-7870.
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
How to take the test: CLEP tests are now solely computer-based. They are no longer paper-and-pencil based. Please check our Web site you will find the latest information, as it becomes available.
- Advanced Placement Exams
Montgomery College awards credit for the Advanced Placement Subject Examinations. Students may submit to the Office of Records and Registration an official record of an appropriate score on any Advanced Placement Examination or International Baccalaureate Examination taken in high school.

To assist students in smooth transfer, Montgomery College and many colleges and universities have developed articulation agreements. These agreements detail curricula and policies that allow students to get an associate's degrees at Montgomery College and complete bachelor's degrees at a four-year institution without loss of credit.

- Hood College
Recently, Montgomery College and Hood College signed a unique agreement that will allow students to complete an associate's degree at Montgomery College and bachelor's and master's degree at Hood in five years of full-time study. Some Montgomery College students may be eligible to enroll for one course free of charge at Hood College.
