Academic Advising and Counseling
Most students receive their introduction to advising and counseling by attending a Montgomery Advising Program (MAP) session, an International Montgomery Advising Program (IMAP) session, or an electronic Montgomery Advising Program (e-MAP) session. The MAP and IMAP sessions are led by a counselor, and as follow-up the student can meet with a counselor or advisor individually. At that session you will learn how assessment scores and/or SAT scores are used and how to select courses and register for classes. You will also learn about academic resources and support services. Sessions usually take approximately two hours.
MAP sessions are for students who took the Accuplacer (English, Reading, and Math) for Native Speakers of English or whose SAT, ACT, TOEFL or ESL Accuplacer scores place them in EN 101 Techniques of Reading and Writing I.
e-MAP sessions are MAP sessions that are online. After going through the e-MAP, the student will bring a certificate to their campus counseling and advising department to receive their assessment scores. www.montgomerycollege.edu/emap
IMAP (International Montgomery Advising Program) sessions are for students who took the ESL Accuplacer for Non-Native Speakers of English. In these sessions, students will learn about the academic resources and support services at Montgomery College and the American English Language Program (AELP). You will also receive an explanation of your placement test scores and receive academic counseling based on those scores.
