Academic Orientation

Academic Orientation Sessions (e-MAPs, MAPs & IMAPs)

Most students receive their introduction to advising and counseling by attending a Montgomery Advising Program (MAP) session,an International Montgomery Advising Program (IMAP) session, or an electronic Montgomery Advising Program (e-MAP) session.  The MAP and IMAP sessions are led by a counselor, and as follow-up the student can meet with a counselor or advisor individually.  At that session you will learn how assessment scores are used and how to select courses and register for classes.  You will also learn about academic resources and support services.  Sessions usually take approximately two hours.

What will you learn in an Academic Orientation Session?

Students newly admitted to Montgomery College (MC) receive their introduction to academic planning  by attending an academic orientation advising group session (MAP or IMAP) at the campus of their choice or through an online session (e-MAP) which can be accessed at any time (please see below for description of these sessions.) Students are required to complete an academic orientation advising session before registering for classes.

Online Montgomery Advising Program - e-MAP Sessions

The e-MAP is available to those students who have already taken  the Accuplacer placement exam at MC (English, Reading, and Math)  or whose SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IFEL or ESL Accuplacer scores place them in ENGL 101 Techniques of Reading and Writing I.  The online session will take approximately one hour to complete.

Montgomery Advising Program - MAP Sessions

MAP sessions cover the same topics presented in the e-MAP but they are done in-person.

International Montgomery Advising Program - IMAP Sessions

IMAPs (International Montgomery Advising Program) are group advising sessions of two hours in length held at each campus for students who took the ESL Accuplacer for Non-Native Speakers of English.

Instructions to sign up for Academic Orientation will be provided after placement testing in the Assessment Center.

What’s next after completing an Academic Orientation Session?

After completing the appropriate Academic Orientation session, students are encouraged to meet with a counselor individually at the campus they plan to attend. These individual one-on-one appointments will allow the student to consult with a counselor regarding their educational path at MC. Information on how to make an appointment can be accessed by admitted MC students by logging into MYMC via and linking to the Starfish portal located at the top of the MYMC page.
