Don SmithAfter working for 13 years in the video production industry, Mr. Don Smith joined the faculty of Montgomery College in 1981. He taught video production and media classes in the Visual Communications Technologies (VCT) Department until 1997. During his faculty years, he served as the Coordinator of the TV/Radio program and Chair of the VCT Department. His transition to administration at the College began with his service for one semester as Acting Dean of the Fine, Performing and Visual Arts on the Rockville campus. Following this posting, Mr. Smith became the Coordinator of the Evening-Weekend/Adjunct Faculty Office, an office providing support each semester to more than 200 adjunct faculty. He moved to the Office of the Instructional Deans to serve as an Administrative Associate and in the spring of 2000 was asked to assist the College in working to arrange the merger of a local, private two-year art school with Montgomery College. To do so, Mr. Smith, while still an employee of Montgomery College, became the Dean of Academic and Student Affairs at the Maryland College of Art and Design (MCAD) in Silver Spring, Maryland. He worked to coordinate the merger process from inside the art school and in the spring of 2001, upon the departure of the school’s president, Mr. Smith was named the President of MCAD. He served in that role until September, 2004, when MCAD was officially acquired by Montgomery College and became the School of Art and Design at MC. During the last year of his service at MCAD, he also became the Interim Director of the Arts Institute.   Between August and November 2006, Mr. Smith served as the Acting Instructional Dean, Social Sciences, Education, History, Health Enhancement and Physical Education. Subsequently, he was appointed Director of the Evening/Weekend Office, with administrative supervisory authority for the Rockville Campus outside of regular office hours.  Mr. Smith earned a B.A. in Film Production from the University of North Carolina and an M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Maryland.

Area Description:

The Evening/Weekend Office (EWO) is a special resource on the Rockville campus that has existed for more than 20 years to support the part-time faculty. It was established initially to provide office support and working space for part-time faculty members at those times when academic department offices were traditionally closed, evenings and weekends. It now also provides support throughout the day as well to many part-time faculty members whose academic department facilities are not large enough to provide a full range of part-time faculty support services.

The broader mission of the Evening/Weekend Office is reflected in the work and responsibilities of the EWO Director. The Director, in addition to providing administrative oversight of the EWO and working to improve resources, services, and professional development opportunities for the part-time faculty, serves as the Campus Administrator, the on-site “Evening Dean,” for the campus during most evening and weekend class hours, those times when many campus offices are usually closed. As such, the Director is an administrative “trouble-shooter” available to any campus community member who might have questions or problems that need immediate attention. In addition, the Director leads campus efforts to identify issues important to the evening/weekend community and to improve the traditional “off hours” campus context in which many students, staff, and faculty work and learn each semester.
