David Phillips joined Montgomery College as the Associate Director of the Arts Institute in March, 2006, and became the Director and Associate Dean of the Arts the following August. A former member of the United States Marine Band, Mr. Phillips has taught in the Music Department at Sioux Falls College and managed music admissions and international conferences at Towson University. He was the first Executive Director of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, after which he was the Director of Administrative Operations at the Baltimore Symphony. Most recently, he completed 13 years as Director of the Lockheed Martin Foundation.
With appointments from two Governors, he recently completed eight years (two as the Chair) on the Maryland State Arts Council. He has served on the Boards of Strathmore Hall, Arts Education in Maryland Schools, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Montgomery County Police Foundation, and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce.
He is a graduate of Leadership Montgomery and Leadership Maryland and has degrees from Otterbein College and The Ohio State University.
The Arts Institute of Montgomery College provides a college wide focus on the arts, including the visual and performing arts. It is committed to promoting and supporting the extensive range of arts activities at Montgomery College and seeks opportunities for continuous learning in the arts for students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. Each year the Arts Institute augments the instructional program by providing opportunities for students to work with and learn from distinguished arts professionals through master classes, artists in residence, guest lecture and performance series, and internships.
