Biography: 

Eun-Woo Chang, Ph.D.For the three years prior to his appointment as the Instructional Dean of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics at Montgomery College, Dr. Chang served as a program director in the Division of Undergraduate Education of the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Before joining NSF, he served as a tenured chemistry professor at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nevada for 17 years. During his tenure at TMCC, Dr. Chang served as Physical Science Department Chair, Faculty Senate Chair, and as a member of several college-wide and state-wide leadership committees. In 2004, he spent a year at College of Southern Nevada (CSN) in Las Vegas as a member of the 2004-05 class of ACE Fellows, a prestigious leadership cohort selected by the American Council on Education. In addition, he served as Interim Dean of Mathematics and Sciences at CSN during the 2005-06 academic year.  

Dr. Chang earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Yeungnam University in South Korea, a M.A. in Chemistry from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.  After receiving his doctorate, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Chemistry at Harvard University.  In 2010, he was named an American Chemical Society Fellow, an honor that is bestowed for contributions to chemistry, the profession and service to the society.

Area Description:

The focus for the Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) area is on providing instruction and support services for students enrolled or majoring in SEM courses. SEM engages in the following activities in order to contribute to student enrollment, retention, and success:

  • Provides high quality instruction in transfer, general education, and developmental courses to enable students to achieve their educational goals;
  • Advises students effectively;
  • Encourages the continued development of professional and support personnel in the unit;
  • Evaluates programs and operations to assure that they meet student and community needs;
  • Creates and maintains an environment in which institutional objectives can be achieved;
  • Develops partnership with business, industry, Montgomery County Public Schools, and transfer institutions; and
  • Pursues grant opportunities to support new area and college initiatives.
