IMPORTANT: Spring 2019 Information Session schedule is now available

How to Apply to Montgomery College Nursing

Before a student can apply and be accepted into the Nursing Program they must first be registered as a student of Montgomery College. Please remember that Montgomery College is open admission but the Nursing Program is an application based program.

Students who have not been accepted into the program cannot take Nursing courses. Graduates of Foreign Nursing Programs who are required to take specific courses for board eligibility must contact the program via email for information on how to proceed. Students who are interested in transferring from another, two-year, Nursing Program must contact the program via email for information on how to proceed. The Nursing Program does not collect or process applications for admission. Applications are submitted directly to the Office of Admissions at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. Please note that the Nursing Program strongly recommends that prospective and/or applying students attend an Information Session.

lease read through the following sections carefully and completely:

Follow the Steps

Step 1. Make Sure of Student Status

To apply to the Nursing Program you must first be registered as a student of Montgomery College. For information on application and registration please contact the Office of Admissions and Enrollment.

Step 2. Complete Prerequisite Course Work

Before applying to the Nursing Program a student must complete the following mandatory, prerequisite courses:*

  • ENGL 101: Introduction to College Writing CE
  • BIOL 212: Human Anatomy and Physiology I *
  • MATH 117: Elements of Statistics or any higher level college math course.

To be eligible for admission, these courses must be completed the semester prior to application. This means that if you enrolled in a priority course but will not receive a grade in that course until after the application deadline, you will have to wait until the next application cycle to apply. All prerequisite and priority courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better to be considered for admissions.

Students who successfully completed MATH110/11/117 prior to the Fall 2018 semester can use this course to meet the MATH117 or higher requirement.

Students who have not taken English 101 or Biology 150 -or any college level course work- will be required to complete Assessment Testing before being able to enroll in these courses. For information about Assessment Testing, please contact the Assessment Center.

*BIOL 150: Principles of Biology is a prerequisite for BIOL 212: Human Anatomy and Physiology I.

What Are Priority Courses?

Priority courses are required for the Nursing Program’s education distribution, but not for application and admission. Prospective students who have completed these courses before applying to the program are more competitive and receive priority admission consideration when applications are reviewed by the Office of Admissions.

  • ENGL 102/103: Techniques of Reading and Writing II or English 109: Writing for Technology and Business
  • BIOL 213: Human Anatomy and Physiology II**

**Nursing applicants whose course work in Biology 212 and/or Biology 213 is older than five years from the date of application must take Biology 228: Pathophysiology. Students who transfer to Montgomery College with Biology 212 and/or Biology 213 do not need to complete Biology 150. For more information on educational requirements please contact the Health Sciences Counselor.

    Step 2.5. Have Transcripts Evaluated

How do you know if you need your transcript evaluated? Are you unsure of exactly what your GPA is? Did you complete several for-credit college classes at a different institution than Montgomery College? Do you need to know if the Biology class you took at a different college meets the criteria outlined by BIOL 150? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, or have different but similar questions about previous college course work, then you need to have your transcript evaluated by the Office of Admissions at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.*  Please email the head of transcript evaluation for more information on how to proceed. Remember a copy of your official transcripts will have to be included with your Health Sciences Application for the Nursing Program if your college course work was completed at a different institution. The official copy will need to be included even if you have previously submitted your transcripts for admission or course evaluation. Be prepared and request several copies of your official transcripts.

Students whose course work and mandatory prerequisites were completed at Montgomery College do not have to submit official transcripts with their application.

*You'll notice that we recommend prospective students conduct official business through the office of admissions at the TP/SS campus of Montgomery College. This is because the Nursing program is based on this campus and this admissions office and counseling staff are the most familiar with the program's requirements.

Step 3. Check Your GPA

A GPA of 2.5 or higher is required and all course work must be completed by the semester prior to application to be considered. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required for acceptance into the program. and no student with a GPA below 2.5 will be admitted.

Step 4. Take the Test of Essential Academic Skills - TEAS Exam

The TEAS exam is required for all application submissions to the Nursing Program. Applicants cannot be exempted from the requirement regardless of factors like educational background, prior course work, grade point average, or existing degrees. The exam must be taken before an application is submitted. The minimum score requirements are:

Reading 70%

Adjusted Individual Total Score: 66%

Applicants who exceed the minimum score requirements are more competitive. For comprehensive information on the TEAS exam, including registration, tutoring and, Academic Support Centers, please visit the web page for the TEAS exam. TEAS score cannot be older than two years.

Step 5. Complete and Submit the Application

The Health Sciences for credit, degree programs use one common application and it can be downloaded from the admissions web page. Please scroll until you find the "Admissions Applications" and download the Health Sciences application. To complete the application, you must have followed all the steps outlined above, fill the application out correctly, indicate that you are applying to the Nursing Program, include a copy of official transcripts if necessary and submit the entire packet to the Office of Admissions at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus on or before the deadline.
