The Love of Teaching: A Faculty Retreat

“How can I be an educator if I do not develop in myself a caring and loving attitude toward the student, which is indispensable on the part of one who is committed to teaching and to the education process itself.” - Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of Freedom

Part-time and full-time faculty gathered for a morning of renewal, refreshment and celebration on Saturday, April 29th. We remembered those educators, mentors and role models who encouraged and inspired us at critical moments in our own journeys and reflected on the powerful opportunities we have in our relationships with our students. Dr. Deborah Stearns, Professor of Psychology, gave an insightful and energizing keynote address on the vital importance of relationships to student success and to our own love of teaching.

One participant wrote in the evaluation, "This workshop was amazing. I left feeling inspired, valued, and deeply grateful to be working at MC."

This second annual retreat was a collaboration between ELITE and the Institute for Part-time Faculty Engagement and Support. Many thanks to Professor Jane Smith and Dr. Jesse Parker for their time and creativity in planning the event and to Dr. Caroline Toscano and Dr. Antonio (Tango) Thomas for their support and participation. To see the presentation slides, visit the Hub – a virtual space for teaching resources developed by Montgomery College faculty. To help plan next year’s retreat, please contact Dr. Carol Moore (carol.moore@montgomerycollege.edu).
