About the School of Art + Design
The School of Art + Design at Montgomery College (SA+D) is ideal if you are looking for an intensive art school experience that prepares you to transfer to a top four-year art school.
Students who choose SA+D are interested in ultimately pursuing a career as a fine or applied artist. Our students thrive in SA+D's studio-intensive environment surrounded by art majors intent on transferring to top art schools to complete their BFA studies with a scholarship. Our students refer to each other as their "art family", and the relationships you will develop at the SA+D will be supportive, stimulating, and last a lifetime!
The "art school experience" at the School of Art + Design is similar to that of a four-year art college. Prospective students submit a portfolio of art work and continue to build and strengthen their portfolio throughout their enrollment. SA+D's degree program offers an associate of fine arts (AFA)—a foundation curriculum parallel to the first two years of a bachelor in fine arts (BFA). The first year studies include core studio courses. In the second year, students select their major: graphic design or studio arts. Your total course-work at the SA+D will include 2/3 studio courses and 1/3 general education courses.
Students graduating from the School of Art + Design continue their study in many areas including fine art, graphic design, animation, video game design, museum work, art education, advertising, fashion design, and interior design. Our SA+D faculty and staff assist with the preparation of transfer applications and portfolios through our innovative Core Academic Review Experience, in which each SA+D student is assigned a faculty mentor to work with them throughout the program. SA+D regularly hosts visiting representatives from four-year colleges to discuss transfer opportunities along with professionals from industry to review our student portfolios.
Student success is at the very core of what we do, and therefore our primary concern is to help you reach your highest potential as an artist!
