Artist In Residence Victor Ekpuk October 7 to 28, 2014

The Rockville Art Department’s Artist in Residence Program will be coordinating workshops and events with the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art October 7-28, 2014. The events are free and will take place in the Silberman Art Gallery, 2nd floor, Art Building on the Rockville campus.

Nigerian-born artist Victor Ekpuk will be giving three hands-on workshops and curator Deborah Stokes will be giving an introductory talk and another talk “TWINS:  DOUBLE TROUBLE/DOUBLE GOOD LUCK” during the Residency. Ms Stokes will also lead a private tour of the museum on October 17.

Mr. Ekpuk is a contemporary artist based in Washington, DC. His artwork explores nsibidi graphics while unhinging traditional symbols and icons and reassembling them in his own unique style. In Mr. Ekpuk’s work, which can cover entire walls and floors, embraces mark-making and transcends traditional African art by entering the arena of global communication.

Ms. Stokes, curator of education at the Smithsonian National museum of African Art, is a distinguished lecturer and has published in national and international journals. Her areas of research include Yoruba art and Popular culture in Africa. For her second lecture at the college, Ms. Stokes will speak on another area of focus in a lecture titled “TWINS:  DOUBLE TROUBLE/DOUBLE GOOD LUCK!” Ms. Stokes will be leading a private tour of the museum, located on the National Mall, on October 17.

About the Sarah Silberman Art Gallery

The Sarah Silberman Art Gallery is an educational resource of the Rockville Art Department. It's primary function is to augment, enhance, and promote the teaching and understanding of art through a diverse program of changing exhibitions, benefiting the college and the public.  Gallery Schedule

The Gallery is located on the second floor of the Paul Peck Art Building on the Rockville Campus, one block west of Route 355 at 51 Mannakee Street. Gallery hours during exhibitions are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. (except for college holidays). View Rockville Campus Map
