Special Initiatives

The focus of Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences at Takoma Park/Silver Spring is the delivery of quality instructional programs and academic support services, while also providing cultural enrichment opportunities to the County and the Washington metropolitan area. 

Special initiatives include:

American Film Institute (AFI)
In partnership with AFI, Montgomery College Takoma Park Campus offers film workshops each year February through July, providing students the opportunity to study with recognized professionals in the field.

Honors Programs at TP/SS
The Honors Program was created for high-ability students seeking exciting and academically rewarding experiences.  It allows students to discover and develop their talents and interests.

Learning Communities
The goal of the Learning Communities initiative is to increase engagement, satisfaction, shared inquiry, and integrative learning on the part of students as well as faculty.

Mental Health
The Mental Health Program is dedicated to providing students with the professional knowledge, values and skills they need to begin a career in mental health/human services.

Paul Peck Institute for American Culture and Civic Engagement
The mission of the Paul Peck Institute for American Culture and Civic Engagement is to celebrate and increase knowledge of American culture, history, principles, and political traditions; and to inspire informed civic participation about critical issues affecting the local, national, and global communities.

School of Art + Design (SA+D)
SA+D offers a rigorous, highly structured, portfolio-intensive "art school" experience for college students majoring in studio art or graphic design and noncredit students seeking new or improved skills in fine and digital arts.

School of Education at TP/SS
The School of Education helps students who want to become teachers, whether in preschool, high school or anywhere in between, to reach their goals.

Women's Studies
The Women's Studies Program offers courses about women and gender for both women and men. The program is designed to explore the experiences and contributions of women to their cultures.

Writing in the Disciplines
Writing in the Disciplines seeks to strengthen student writing skills and help faculty incorporate writing into their courses.
