Is It Too Late to Transfer This Fall 2014?
The correct answer is: it depends! A few Maryland State schools have had a surge in transfer applicants over the past several years and your application for Fall 2014 may be too late.
UMCP – College Park – Applications are still being accepted, but on a space-available basis only. Students who applied by March 1 will hear in mid-April; if you apply after March 1, you will hear a decision in very late June/early July. The MTAP guarantee of admission only applies if your transfer application was submitted by March 1. UMCP reports that they already received a very high number of transfer applications for Fall – more than they have space to admit.
Towson – Priority Deadline was Jan. 15th for Fall 2014; however, TU has said that as long as their Transfer Application is still accessible on the Web, you may still apply on a space-available basis. If in doubt, call. www.towson.edu/main/admissions/apply/transfers/index.asp
UMBC - Priority Deadline was March 15 – call to see if Transfer Applications are still being accepted.
Universities at Shady Grove – Many programs continue to admit students now and throughout the summer on a space-available basis. Call or e-mail a Program Director to see whether transfer applications are still being accepted for Fall 2014. List of USG Majors: www.shadygrove.umd.edu/academics/undergraduate
UMUC – Admission is on a rolling basis – applications are still being accepted.
Any other school: Check the Transfer Admissions link on a school’s Admissions Page for deadlines and information. If the Priority Deadline has passed, call to ask whether transfer applications are still being accepted.
- Check the Financial Aid page of school(s) of interest to look for transfer scholarships.
- Watch the MC Transfer Scholarship Blog for new scholarship announcements: mctransferscholarships.blogspot.com
- Google “Psychology Scholarships Maryland” or some variation to search for general awards for your major.
- Do NOT pay for a scholarship search program – there are many free options out there.
- File the FAFSA – regardless of income, most scholarship programs require you to file a FAFSA even for non-need based awards.
- Keep searching! New awards are posted weekly: mctransferscholarships.blogspot.com
Transfer Planning and General Education Courses:
If you plan to transfer to a Maryland public (state) school, your General Education Program will transfer to MD state schools without a course-by-course review. Here is a summary of the Transfer Policy:
Montgomery College’s General Education Program meets Maryland State (MHEC) guidelines. The MHEC transfer policy assures that general education courses taken at any MD State institution will transfer to another MD State institution without the need for a course-by-course match.
For MD public schools, you do not have to fulfill General Education AREA lines on ARTSYS Recommended Transfer Program pages (RTP’s). For example, students who finish MC's General Education Requirements below for an AA degree (34 credits with a 3-credit HLTH) will have met 34 credits of UMCP (College Park)’s General Education Requirements without a course-by-course match and will need to take only 6 more credits - two courses - of General Education after transfer.
The Short Version: If you plan to transfer to UMCP, Towson, etc., your best bet is to complete MC’s General Education Program – check off boxes on an MC Gen Ed list – see below. You do NOT have to match ARTSYS lines “I-Series AREA”, “Scholarship in Practice AREA”courses – instead, just be sure that you finish MC Gen Ed Program with a 3-credit Health instead of 1-credit. For further information, read the fine print on the pages below and see a counselor!

TRANSFER PLANNING SPOTLIGHT: NURSING
So you want to become a nurse – join the crowd! This challenging, rewarding major has attracted increasing numbers of students every year. The competition is fierce for seats in Bachelor’s degree programs (BSN = Bachelor of Science in Nursing). Many MC students aim for the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s program at Shady Grove (UMB-USG), making this one of the most competitive BSN programs in the area. UMB’s School of Nursing has campuses in Baltimore and at Shady Grove. The full-time BSN program at Shady Grove has 40 seats open every Fall and Spring, with an abundance of applicants. Although minimum Grade Point Average’s are listed as a 3.0 overall and 3.0 for Science courses (Chemistry, Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II, and Microbiology), most accepted students have a higher GPA’s, depending on the applicant pool. Meeting the minimum GPA is not a guarantee of admission. Read over the MC to UMB – School of Nursing Prerequisites List carefully: RecommendedCourses - MC to UMB School of Nursing
Plan Alternate Options if you are headed toward Nursing, regardless of your GPA and TEAS test scores - a backup plan will always be helpful. Students may find that there is slightly less competition for seats at private schools and less well-known state schools. Others may want to consider RN to BSN programs – finish MC’s Associate of Science in Nursing can allow you to enter a degree completion program while you are employed as a nurse. In Maryland, by the year 2020, all nurses who want to work in hospitals must have a BSN. MC has developed strong articulation agreements with schools like GW, Drexel, Stevenson, Trinity, etc. to assure that our students will move directly into BSN completion programs (RN to BSN)

ENROLL NOW IN MTAP – the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program
Now, more than ever, ALL students new to Montgomery College should enroll in MTAP if they want to keep UMCP open as a possible transfer school later down the line. The Online MTAP Application is now available on their website: www.uga.umd.edu/requirements/MarylandTransferAdvantageProgram.php
The MTAP guarantee of admission is only for students who apply by the Priority Transfer Deadlines (March 1 for Fall, August 1 for Spring). Even students hoping for Limited Enrollment Programs ( www.lep.umd.edu ) (competitive majors) should still apply to MTAP to take advantage of the ability to take a class at UM (3 max) and receive special advising messages. Bottom line: enroll in MTAP regardless of your transfer plans, just to keep the door open to UMCP later. June 1 is the next MTAP deadline.
