Statement by Montgomery College President Brian K. Johnson on the Montgomery County Council’s Passage of Scholarship Bill 7-09
Workforce Investment Scholarship Program to Assist Montgomery College Students
“Montgomery College applauds the Montgomery County Council for passing the Workforce Investment Scholarship bill, which will provide valuable scholarship assistance to students at Montgomery College and the Universities of Shady Grove who are pursuing degrees in high-demand careers.
With the bill’s unanimous approval, the Councilmembers have demonstrated that they understand the importance of higher education to Montgomery County’s residents. I thank Councilmember Mike Knapp, the bill’s chief sponsor, and the Council for their creative approach to solving a very real problem.
Montgomery College students want to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to pursue baccalaureate degrees, but the lack of funding can deter them from their dreams or force them to seek their education out-of-state. The Workforce Investment Scholarships will offer students a financial incentive to stay in Montgomery County, pursue careers that will help the county compete in a global marketplace, and help our local economy thrive.”
