Author Alice McDermott to Speak at Montgomery College April 16

Award-winning author Alice McDermott will hold a book reading and discussion Thursday, April 16, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the faculty/staff dining room located in the Campus Center Building at the Montgomery College Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md. General admission is $10; $6 for students and seniors; free of charge for F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference members.

McDermott will be available to sign books after her discussion. Her books will be on sale at the event.

McDermott is a master at capturing Irish-Catholic American suburban life. Her first novel, "A Bigamists’ Daughter," was published to wide acclaim in 1982. "That Night" (1987), her second novel, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. A film version of "That Night" was produced by Warner Bros. and released in the spring of 1992. "At Weddings and Wakes" (1992), her third novel, became a New York Times bestseller. "Charming Billy" (1998) won the National Book Award. It tells the tragic story of the late Billy Lynch within the complex matrix of a tightly knit Irish American community. McDermott’s short stories have appeared in Ms., Redbook, Mademoiselle, and Seventeen magazines.
