Debra Bright, Ph.D.

Dr. Debra Bright was appointed to serve as Interim Associate Dean of Student Services at the Rockville Campus in January, 2013. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Director of Articulation, Transfer and Academic Services, where she provided collegewide leadership in creating and maintaining articulation agreements to help ease student transfers to four-year institutions.

Dr. Bright began her career at Montgomery College in January, 2007, after serving for 13 years as the Director of Admissions and Student Services at The George Washington University (GW) Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD). During her tenure at GW, she shepherded the recruitment and admissions process and developed annual enrollment goals for over 30 graduate programs. In her capacity as director she also advised prospective students, monitored student progress, coordinated a variety of recruitment and special events, organized and facilitated orientation programs for new students and faculty, helped to secure and monitor a one half-million dollar graduate fellowship budget, and served on a myriad of university-wide committees.

While at GW, Dr. Bright was an active member of the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals (NAGAP). In 2005, she was appointed to serve as the Conference Chairperson for the NAGAP annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada and was subsequently elected to the NAGAP Executive Governing Board.

Currently, Dr. Bright is a member of NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and represents Region II on the NASPA Community College Advisory Board. She also serves on the Steering Committee for the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL). Additionally, she holds membership in a variety of other professional, civic, and service organizations, including the American Association of Community Colleges-National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA), American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC), National Council for Negro Women (NCNW) Potomac Valley Section, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

In 2011, she was appointed by County Executive Isiah Leggett to serve on the Montgomery County Commission for Women (CFW), and was selected by the Commission to chair the 2013 and 2014 Women's Legislative Briefing.

Dr. Bright holds a bachelor of science in Broadcast Journalism from Syracuse University, a master's degree in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard University, and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University. Her research interests include leadership development for women, and college access and persistence for students of color..

Area Description: 

Dr. Bright serves as a member of the Collegewide Behavioral Intervention Team Steering Group and the Rockville Behavioral Intervention Team.  She assists the dean of student services in overseeing the counseling and advising, disability support services, veterans services, and student support services/TRIO program.
