Since the late 1970s Montgomery College has been a leader in embracing environmental stewardship through its Resource Conservation Program. Montgomery College was one of the first organizations to provide full time staff dedicated to Energy Management and Environmental Safety. Details of the program are described in the Resource Conservation Plan.
On Earth Day, April 22, 2008, The County Council adopted Bill 32-07, which codified the County's greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals. The bill established the Sustainability Working Group (SWG) and charged it with developing the Climate Protection Plan. Bill 32-07's goal is to reduce County wide greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below the amount in the FY2005 Baseyear, including a plan to stop increasing County wide greenhouse gas emissions by 2010 and acheive a 10% reduction every 5 years through 2050. Mr. David Capp, Associate Vice President for College Facilities is the College's SWG representative.

In Fiscal Year 2004 the College joined other County agencies in forming the Environmental Policy Implementation Task Force(EPITF) and assisted in producing the first Environmental Policy Issues and Action Report. In FY2005 the College participated as a member of the Green Building Subcomittee which resulted in Green Building Legislation being passed by the County Council in the first half of FY 2007. The College has prepared an Environmental Action Plan for the past several years an example of the plan is provided below.
