Every week, 1 in 4 children in Montgomery county struggle with hunger. In some areas of our county, over 50% of school age children qualify for the Free and Reduced Meals program (FARMS). But on the weekends, these children often do not have any food until school lunch on Monday.
Manna Food Center started the Smart Sacks program to help combat children's weekend hunger in Montgomery County. Every week of the MCPS school year, volunteers pack donated food in backpacks and deliver the backpacks to county elementary schools. Children take the backpacks home on Friday.
|All three campuses of Montgomery College have teamed up with Manna as Smart Sacks partners. Each campus sponsors a local elementary school by having student volunteers pick up, pack, and deliver the kid-friendly food to their sponsored school. Manna provides the food, and MC provides the person-power to feed the kids on the weekend.|
Check the Student Life Events Calendar to find the next scheduled Smart Sacks bagging day.
Stop by the Student Life Office, SA 186 or contact the Service Learning Coordinator, 240-567-7840, to volunteer.
If you can count to 12 and pack a grocery bag, then you can help feed 50 children!
Volunteers are also needed to help sort food for Smart Sacks at the Manna Food warehouse. Contact Student Life to find out how to get involved!
