Service Learning is:

  • A learning method that combines classroom instruction with volunteer activities that address real community needs
  • A form of active learning that values critical thinking, problem solving, and reflection
  • A "hands on" experience that can help you develop academic skills and community connections

Requirements at MC-Germantown


Service Learning assignments are tailored to each course, with reflection activities and learning assessments that help you connect the volunteer service to in-class learning objectives.  Specific Service Learning requirements are determined by each instructor and will always be included in the class syllabus. Generally, Service Learning assignments require:

  • 12 or more hours of volunteer service per semester
  • A signed Release/Waiver and Placement Agreement
  • Recording of volunteer service hours/Timesheet
  • Reflection and assessment activities
  • A commitment to community service
