Chapter 33: The Post 9/11 GI Bill

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is  for individuals with at least 90 days of accumulated service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. An honorable discharge is required to be eligible for the Post- 9/11 GI Bill. See More 

If you are using the Post 9/11 GI Bill, each semester you are required to fill out a Certification Request for VA Benefits  and submit it to the VA Office.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill - Eligibility Requirements

If you are interested in using Chapter 33- Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits**, visit the  VA's website  for information about these benefits and eligibility requirements.   Request a Certificate of Eligibility for Chapter 33 benefits by submitting an updated  VA form 22-1990  to the VA.

Chapter 33 benefits are contingent upon time in service after September 11, 2001. As your time in service increases, you will need to request an updated DD Form 214, Discharge Papers and Veterans Separation Documents, from the VA to be eligible for an increase in benefits. 

Service Requirements after 9/10/01
An individual must serve an accumulation of:

 % of Maximum Benefit Payable

At least 36 months


At least 30 continuous days on active duty and discharged due to service-connected disability

At least 30 months, but less than 36 months


At least 24 months, but less than 30 months


At least 18 months, but less than 24 months


At least 12 months, but less than 18 months


At least 06 months, but less than 12 months


At least 90 days, but less than 06 months
