What is Mathematical Biology?

Many biological processes involve complex interactions and
mechanisms that are often difficult to fully understand and even harder to
replicate in the laboratory. The practice of using animal and cellular model
systems has long been an approach to overcoming these problems. However,
due to laboratory constraints biologists apply mathematics to develop model
systems. With its increased use in the natural sciences, it is imperative that
undergraduate students gain an appreciation for the mathematical tools required
to investigate complex natural phenomenon.
