Safe Zone Training

Rockville campus

April 6 & April 13

1:30-4:30 both days.

Description:

Gain new understanding of gender, gender identity, gender expression and the diverse range of sexual and affectional orientations. Acquire resources and referral information and practice communication skills for classroom or office discussions or unexpected disclosure. It's your choice about how visible and active to be as an ally after class.

Foster a welcoming academic environment for students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender--or questioning identity. LGBTQ students often feel unsafe at school, resulting in reduced attendance to avoid risk, bullying, or bias. Empower students to cope with ignorance or discrimination, build community among peers, and focus on their studies.

Upon completion of this class, you will be able to:

- Describe the foundation and goals of a Safe Zone program

- Increase your awareness, knowledge and skills in order to be an affective ally for LGBTQ students

- Identify resources and referral options at MC and in the Mid-Atlantic LGBTQ community

- Strengthen your network and community of allies across the College

Safe Zone Update Training II:  Being an Effective Ally of Trans* Students

Note:  Open to those that have completed the original Safe Zone training and to counseling faculty

Rockville campus

April 20

1:00-3:00

Description:

In order to establish and promote an accepting and inclusive environment for all students, the college needs to have knowledgeable and effective allies in place for LGBTQI+ students and employees. Increasingly, transgender and gender nonconforming students are coming out and enrolling in college. Also, more and more faculty and college employees are coming out as transgender. In order to meet the needs of students and employees, it is important that colleges increase educational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to around the needs of transgender people.

Participants in this training will gain a deeper understanding of contemporary terms and concepts related to gender and sexuality as they apply to the experiences of transgender and gender nonconforming college students. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain clarity about this complex topic and about how to be effective for students and colleagues who are transgender or gender nonconforming. The training will include activities where participants can practice different strategies for engaging with trans* students and others about issues related to gender diversity, so that they can develop a plan to be an effective ally. The training will create a safe space to explore questions and concerns about this contentious topic and will emphasize the need for each participant to decide on strategies to use that work for them and their role at the college.

Upon completion of this class, you will be able to:

- Increase your awareness, knowledge and skills in order to be an effective ally for trans*students
- Identify resources and referral options at MC and in the Mid-Atlantic LGBTQ community for transgender people
- Strengthen your network and community of allies across the College
