Writing Basics

  • Freerice.com is an appealing vocabulary-building website.  For each correctly defined word the sponsor donates ten grains of rice to alleviate world hunger.  Next to the vocabulary frame, a rice bowl gradually fills, so you can see how much you have donated to a good cause.  Moreover, the site contains information about global warming and world hunger, and it could be tied into a writing assignment. The vocabulary level ranges from level 1 (reply means respond) to level 60 (truckle means submit).
  • Dictionary.com is an online dictionary, which provides a term's meaning, synonyms, examples of usage, and pronounciation.  The site also links to a theaurus, quotes, and references.
  • Thinkmap Visual Thesaurus is an online thesaurus and dictionary of over 145000 words that you explore using an interactive map. It's a tool for people who think visually.
