For someone who already holds at least a bachelors’ degree, becoming a teacher requires careful planning.  For a great overview of the various pathways to teaching in Maryland for degree holders, review this presentation.

The School of Education also offers coursework for persons who already have a Bachelor’s Degree and wish to become a certified teacher in Maryland, or for teachers who need to enroll in additional courses to renew certification.

NOTE: Montgomery College does NOT provide the opportunity for supervised teaching experiences which are required for certification in Maryland.

To ensure that potential teachers are enrolling in the correct certification courses, students with prior degrees are recommended to have their college transcripts evaluated by the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Certification. Coursework completed outside the U.S. must first be officially evaluated by one of the MSDE approved agencies.

Before the Maryland State Department of Education transcript evaluation can occur, students must pass a basic skills test (SAT, ACT, GRE or Praxis Core)  AND the Praxis II Content Examination in their certification area. Upon receipt of the transcript evaluation, students can then determine what courses Montgomery College offers that meet the MSDE Professional Education course requirements.

Transcripts SHOULD NOT  be sent to Montgomery College for review; an unofficial transcript may be presented to an Education Advisor to gain permission to enroll in courses which are needed.

Individuals who are seeking to become middle or high school teachers in the sciences, mathematics, or world languages may want to investigate the Alternative Certification for Effective Teachers (ACET) program, a partnership program between Montgomery College and Montgomery County Public Schools.

You can find helpful information at the website for the Center for Career Changers to the Classroom, an organization for career changers interested in teaching in Maryland.  The Center works with corporations and individuals to assist prospective career changers as they make the decision to teach and choose the best program to become certified to teach in Maryland.
