10.5 Set Up and Manage a Blog (Web log)

"Blog" is short for web log. A blog is like an online diary, used for sharing thoughts. On a blog, a blogger creates a post on any subject and people comment on the post.

Add A Blog

  1. Go to your Content folder in the Workarea.
  2. Click on the folder you want your blog to reside.
  3. Click New, then Blog.
  4. Complete the entries in the Properties tab.

    a. Blog Name: The name as it will appear in the Content Folder. The name cannot contain (';', '\', '/', ':', '*', '?', ' " ', '<', '>', '|', '&', ''').
    b. Blog Title: The title as it will appear on the blog/Web site.
    c. Visibility: Select Public (all site visitors can view the blog)
    d. Comments: Uncheck these items to disable comments and authentication
  5. Click on the Subjects tab. Each blog post can be tagged with a subject to allows site visitors to easily find blog posts relating to a specific subject. This is optional. Examples of subjects are Movies, Sports, Arts, Music, Technologies, etc.

    a. If the Subjects entry field doesn’t exist, click Add New Subject link.
    b. Enter as many blog subjects as desired. Subjects cannot contain (';', '\', '/', ':', '*', '?', ' " ', '',', '|', '&', ''').
  6. Click on the Blog Roll tab. A Blog Roll allows you to add links to other related blogs.
  7. Type a name in Link Name input field: This describes the link in the blog roll.

  8. Provide a link to the URL input field: This is the address of the blog you are adding to your blog roll. The URL must begin with http://.
  9. Enter the Short Description input field: A short description about this site.
  10. Click the floppy diskette icon to Save.
  11. To view your blog, type the URL http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/blogcas.aspx?blogid=xxxxx (where edu/blogcas.aspx is your Page Template and xxxxx is your blog ID), in Internet Explorer.  To find your blog ID, follow these steps:
    a. Under Content Workarea, click on your Blog.
    b. Click View and then Folder Properties. The ID is displayed on the lower left of this picture.

Assign The Blog Template To The Blog

To assign the blog template to the blog:

  1. Click Content in the Workarea.
  2. Navigate to the blog folder and click the name of the blog.
  3. Go to View -> Properties. Click Edit.
  4. Under Page Templates, uncheck Inherit Parent Template Configuration.
  5. Click on the dropdown list and select edu/blogcas.aspx.

    PLEASE NOTE: If the /edu/blogcas.aspx template is not listed, first follow the instructions to add/change the template to the blog folder.

  6. Click on the Add link and then click on the radio button next to edu/blogcas.aspx.
  7. In the Style Sheet section, change WorkArea/csslib/blogs.css to /edu/css/edu-blog.css.

  8. Click Update (a small floppy diskette icon) to save.

Brand The Blog With A Banner And Links (optional)

Display Content is similar to a Web site banner. It allows you to customize/brand your blog. Display Content is located below the Blog Name and above the Blog Posts. The red arrow below shows the location of the Display Content.

PLEASE NOTE: If you choose not to create a Blog Display Content or leave it blank, the Display Content is not displayed on your blog site.

  1. Click Content in Workarea.
  2. Navigate and select the folder that contains the blog.
  3. Click New and then HTML Content.

  4. In the Title input field, type the name Display Content. The title must be "Display Content."

  5. Enter your content in the editor to customize your display content.
  6. Click Publish (a small paper with a check icon) to save and publish to the blog site.

Add A Blog Post

  1. Click Content in the Workarea, navigate and select your blog.
  2. Click on New and then HTML Post.
  3. Enter the Title input field.

  4. Enter your content in the Content entry area.
  5. Click on the Summary tab.

  6. In the Subjects box, select the subject(s) you want this post to relate to.
  7. Click Publish to save and publish the blog post.

Edit A Blog Post

  1. Click Content in the Workarea, navigate and select your blog.
  2. Click on the blog post title.

  3. Click the Edit button (a small paper and pen icon) and change your blog post.
  4. Click Publish (a small paper with a check icon) to save and publish to the blog web site.

Delete A Blog Post

  1. Click Content in the Workarea, navigate and select your blog.
  2. Click Delete and then Posts.
  3. Click on the checkbox next to each post you want to delete.

  4. Click Delete Content to delete (a small paper and a trash can icon).

Add/Remove Blog Subjects

  1. Click Content in the Workarea, navigate and select your blog.
  2. Click View and then Folder Properties.
  3. Click Edit Properties (a small paper and pen icon).
  4. Click the Subjects tab.

  5. Do one of the following:
    a. To add a new subject, click the Add New Subject link.
    b. To remove a subject, click either the Remove Last Subject link or the Remove link.
  6. Click Update (a small red floppy diskette icon) to save.

  2. Click View and then Folder Properties.
  3. Click Edit Properties (a small paper and pen icon).

Add/Edit/Remove A Blog Roll Link

  1. Click Content in the Workarea, navigate and select your blog.
  2. Click View and then Folder Properties.
  3. Click Edit Properties (a small paper and pen icon).
  4. Click the Blog Roll tab.

  5. Do one of the following:
    a. To add a new Roll Link, click the Add New Roll link.
    b. To remove a Roll Link, click either Remove Last Roll Link or Remove Roll Link.
    c. To edit a Roll Link, enter the field(s) you want to modify.
  6. Click Update (a small red floppy diskette icon) to save.
